Comparing Yourself to others and why God says you shouldn’t.

Personal Battle with Comparing
If you haven’t read my blog about depression and life with infertility, I’d love for you to go check it out. I remember while going through that tough time in my life I use to compare myself to everyone around me. I would think to myself “Why can’t I be like that person”. Or “They have everything I want”. And “I’m not worth it”. “I don’t even have what I’m so longing for”.
I’ve even said a couple of times “But if I’m the one who serves you”. And “if I’m the one who has dedicated her life to you.” “Why don’t I have what they has?”
I’ve struggled with comparing myself countless times. Why? It’s human nature
Comparing your Self-Worth
Naturally, we learn that your “self-worth” is according to what other people have. And if you don’t have it … step aside. We learn to wish to be like others. Because being like others is “better than what you are now.”
So trust me if anyone needs to take this advice IT’S ME.
But, can we just talk for a minute. We as humans tend to believe that “the grass is greener on the other side.”
We’re prone to thinking “They’re so lucky” or “If I could only look like this”. Or in the back of our heads, we say “Why don’t I have that”. And we use the famous phrases “I wish” and “If only”.
You’re Perfect
First of all let me tell you this …STOP!
You are perfect in every way !
Why you may ask?
Trust me … I’ve had to go through this list over and over again myself on countless occasions. Especially when I’ve felt less than or like others had it better than I do.
5 Reasons you shouldn’t be Comparing yourself
You are created in the image of God
According to the Bible, we didn’t come into being by “accident”. There was a purpose in mind! YOU! God brought us into existence because He wanted YOU! You were created in the exact image of the one who created YOU!
“Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:26-27
You are fearfully and wonderfully made
You are a creation that has a purpose. Before you were formed in your mother’s womb, HE thought of YOU! He knows exactly how many hairs are on the top of your head. He knows everything about YOU… LITERALLY the good, the bad, and the ugly, He know’s it all and still chose to create YOU!
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them” Psalms 139:13-16
You have everything you need in Christ Jesus
Let me start this one with the passage from Matthew 6:25-33
“For this reason, I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing?
Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, What will we eat? or What will we drink? or What will we wear for clothing? For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Need I say more?
Your worth is defined by God
Don’t allow yourself to be defined by what this world wants to say you’re worth. Or even what you think you might be worth. You are worth so much more than what you think … why? Because …
“knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” 1 Peter 1:18-20
All of these things have lead up to my last point …
God sent His son to die for YOU
God, the creator of heaven and earth, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, gave His Son to die for you. He suffered and died the death of a criminal so you wouldn’t have to. He shed His blood on the cross of Calvary so you could have everlasting life. You are redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ! What more could you ask for! He loved you that much … because He sees you’re worth.
“By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.” 1 John 4:9
With all of this said, I want to remind you of this. Stop comparing yourself to what you think you’d like to be or what you wish you could have. Remember who you are in Christ Jesus … He is more than enough.
