Homemaking Role – 5 Tips on Efficiency
As a Homemaker, we tend to allow ourselves to fall into the pit of the never ending routines. We wake up, get ourselves and everyone else ready for the day. You make breakfast, wash the dishes, clean the house, tend to your children, make lunch, wash the dishes, clean up and so on. It starts to become so mundane, that we begin to lack interest and efficiency in our role as homemakers.
I get it! I’m the same way. It’s a hard job. I mean I literally feel like I clean 24/7 and there’s always more laundry to do and dishes to wash. With that being said, It isn’t the easiest role to take on but it is the most rewarding.
There are ways to make it easier to handle and become more efficient. Here is my Top 5 list on “How To Be Efficient in Your Homemaking Role.”.
Wake up early

If you haven’t read my blog about Self – Care I urge you to go read it. I talk about how self-care is so important in a mother’s and wife’s life. If one doesn’t care for herself, how can she serve and care for those who are depending on her? Waking up early has many benefits. First, everyone else is asleep. The quietness of the morning allows you to get up, shower, get dressed, drink your coffee, and enjoy all of those things in peace. I learned first hand that this is key.
When I’m able to do all of these things before everyone else in the home wakes up, I notice I’m more efficient and productive throughout the day. Now, does this mean I wake up at 4 am every single day? NO! But even getting in a good 30 mins before everyone else needs you is so much more helpful than starting your day without taking the time to get yourself together.
Understanding who you are in your Homemaking Role
What do I mean by this? I mean, understand your strengths and weaknesses.Understand what you need to do for yourself to create a more productive day. I mean really study these things.
Have you noticed that you’re more productive when listening to music or a podcast? Put some on. Listen to it while you’re working. If this is something that’s going to help you get those daily tasks done then do it! I began to notice that I’m the type of person who needs to have something going on in the background to get myself motivated to get the task done. Understand and study yourself! I personally love listening to Jazz and Classical music. Even just listening to some YouTube videos in the background helps my productivity all the more.
If you’re like me you’ll quickly begin to realize the areas you struggle with in your home or the areas that you love to focus on. Again, understand and study yourself. Why is it that those areas in your homemaking role are so hard or so easy? Use that to your advantage. For me, I love cleaning in general but hate washing the dishes and doing the laundry. I’ve noticed that I love to focus hours upon hours on the things I love and literally go days without folding the laundry… Understand and study yourself. Do the things that are harder for you to complete first and end your task with the things you love or visa-versa.
Understand who you are and what you need to do for yourself to create a more productive day. Understand who you are and what you need to do for yourself to be more efficient in your homemaking role.
Avoid distractions

You know what I’m talking about here. Let’s be honest with ourselves. We open our phones and say “I’m just going to check Facebook really quick”, next thing you know you’re on instagram watch videos on people doing dumb things for hours straight. Put down those phones for just a second and you’ll see just how much you can get done within your day. The average person spends up to 5 hours on their phone each day or more. Imagine how much more you could get done with those extra 5 hours.
Enjoy the homemaking role task at hand
In the words of Author Jennifer L Scott “Delight in the mundane task, we would rather be doing more glamorous, exciting things. Delight in the mundane, change your mind and perspective about the task at hand. If we could accept the present circumstance and enjoy that mundane task, we can truly start to change our lives and enjoy the moments at home.” Watch her video here on “The Secret to a Homemaker’s Success.”
If we could just stop and enjoy what we’re are doing in the present moment, whether it be cleaning, cooking, ironing clothes or caring for our family… enjoy those moments because its those moments that you are making memories in your home. Yes, at times homemaking can be rough, but you do it, so you and your family can have a home to make memories in. Enjoying the task at hand will make homemaking all that more easy.
In everything you do, do it unto the Lord
“Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; it is in the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24
Wait, didn’t I just say to enjoy the task at hand because you’re doing it so your family can make memories. Yes, yes I did. But in order to serve others, and in order for your family to be able to make memories in your home, you must do all things full-heartedly as for the Lord and not for others. If you do everything from this perspective you will be able to do it wholeheartedly for you and your family.
